Throw a pony #lolology

It all started with a workshop 'studio shoot with your horse', which over 60.000 people would attend, and now Facebook is exploding with events such as 'studio shoot with your big fat mum'. Trendwolves knows why!

Sheer uselessness, one would say. Why do 29.932 facebookers want to attend a workshop shetlandpony throwing in september? It all started last week with an event page created by the Dutch photographer Hilde van der Heyden. In 24 hours, already 20.000 people consented they would attend the 'studio shoot with your horse'. Van der Heyden took the page offline, 'because of the weird comments and horse jokes', but quickly other versions and parodies emerged. Such as these:

Which led in the meantime to these:

So, ladies and gentlemen, we thought long and hard about this very intruiging phenomenon. And we say: it’s the exams, stupid! We have bored/unnerved teen brains on speed, and a lot of time to kill behind a desk, resulting in mounting absurdity.

In a survey we conducted last year, facebook is a beacon of light in times of social deprivation (studying in a room, all alone, poor dears). Six out of ten youngsters proclaimed he or she feels less lonely because of social media during exam periods. And absurd humour is exactly what these boys and girls need. As we explain in our European Youth Trend Report (still available, by the way), humour is the mantra of the day. Amidst the stress and the high expectations, laughing works as a coping mechanism. It helps to relief stress, reduces anxiety and it puts things in perspective. So youngsters escape momentarily from their worries by means of absurd apps, vines, games, movie clips and ... (right now) facebook event pages.

In our trend report, we dubbed this trend lolology, and this is only one fine example of the importance of humour in today's world. Not only for youngsters, but for all of us. Think about what lolology can do for your business, too. And throw us a pony if you would like to know more! Let's play!
